There are 5 ships of different lengths (2–5 cells). Avoid clustering your ships together — spread them out to reduce the chance of consecutive hits. Placing larger ships along the edges can sometimes be an effective strategy.

Start with a checkerboard pattern (fire at every other cell) since the smallest ship is 2 cells long, so you won't miss anything. Once you get a hit, focus on adjacent cells to determine the ship's orientation, then continue along that line until it's sunk.
